The
cross is a symbol whose different forms have been found almost everywhere since
ancient times. It is far from belonging only and exclusively to Christianity as
many are tempted to believe. It should be mentioned that Christianity, at least
in its outer and worldwide known aspect, seems to have disregarded the symbolic
idea of the cross, observing it only as a mere feature of a historical fact. In
reality, views like those are not excluded, so even the latter is, in a sense,
only the consequence of the former, but most of our contemporaries are ignorant
of this view.
It is often
considered that accepting the symbolic meaning should take rejecting the
literal or historical meaning for granted.
Such a view
results from the ignorance of the law of congruence which is the foundation of
the whole symbolism and on the basis of which each thing, essentially resulting
from a metaphysical principle whose reality completely retains, carries or
formulate that principle in its own way and according to its order of existence
so that, from one order to another, all the things are connected and
synchronized in order to contribute to universal and complete harmony which is,
in a number of appearances, similar to the reflection of the very original
unity.
The
object in space/video installation 'Excommunication' consists of nine burnt and
one active monitor, which are arranged in the shape of a cross.
The active
monitor stands at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical lines and the
video installation is broadcast from it.
The video
installation is a clip from Ken Russell's film 'The Devils', processed by the
editing intervention.
In
this case, the video installation, having an interactive relation with the
object in space (the cross) makes a form in which two different media
structures condense and interweave , making a new expressive form with a large
number of possible interpretations.
According to the
above mentioned (in order to avoid possible abuse) the connotation of the whole
work should be carefully chosen, and that possibility is, above all, left to
the observer.
One of my
personal interpretations (that I do not want to impose) is that the work
'Excommunication' reconsiders the relation of the cross (as a symbol that has
achieved the most widespread sense through Christian religion, presenting the
key relation in the communication between God and Man) and electronic networks
(presented by monitors) which more and more conquer the space occupied by religion
within previous historical cycles, directing the inward process of
communication to outward relations in the society.
Electronic
networks without borders are not only the monopoly of the advocates for
peace and progress. The networks connect everybody, from ecological extremists
to the opponents of the Bible, fascists, unions of criminals and acadamic fans
of terrorists. They all form a part of the rapidly spreading TRANSNATIONAL
CIVIL SOCIETY which does not always act in a civilized way.
Through this work one system of communication is replaced
by another through its destructive form, thus demolishing not only the reality
of the previous system, but also the very subject that COMMUNICATES.
